Bill Gothard and Moving On
A recent post at Tulipgirl encouraging ex-Gothardites to move on, prompted my thoughts on the subject. Wow! Does this bring back memories? I've been browsing the X-ATI Guy link. While I did not go as deeply into Gothard's ministry as he did, I certainly did attend my share of Basic Seminars and one "Advanced" Seminar back in the late 70's and early 80's, and bought almost everything he said, hook, line and sinker....including the bible verse that was attached to everything he said. Too bad the verse quoted rarely matched the point he was trying to make. When you sign up for a seminar that requires you to attended nightly seminars for 2 to 3 hours, and all day Friday and Saturday, with no time to really reflect and actually look up the scripture that is being subscribed to the given "universal non-optional life principal" Mr. Gothard is equating it to, no wonder so many people have followed in lock step with his teachings. Indoctrination 101. My wife writes about it here. When I got that letter in the mid-80's just before Christmas from "the headquarters", that admonished Christians everywhere not to purchase "Cabbage Patch Dolls", due to their "Satanic Nature", and if you have one to remove it from your home, so it won't have "bondage over you", I finally thought he went off the deep end.
X-ATI Guy directs readers to Al Menconi's website and his book "Dear Mr. Gothard" which counters much of Gothard's teachings on Christian Rock. While I did buy into most of what Gothard said; I always found his lectures about Christian Rock unconvincing, but not enough that for one small, but regretful time in my life I gave up the very music that I loved and was a bedrock for my teenage Christian faith. I loved Larry Norman (read my recent blog about Larry here), Randy Stonehill, Keith Green, ect ..but I let Gothard's arguments convince me they where evil, sinful, and not of God. So I exchanged my Christian rock tapes and made a tape of his "10,000 voices singing the hymns" album. But, boy did I go up on the spiritual barometer! Or so I thought. Nineteen years old and driving around listening to "How Great Thou Art" a cappella 24/7. I gave up a Larry Norman/Randy Stonehill together in concert with a full band, because I had "made a commitment" not to listen to CHRISTIAN ROCK!!. Yes Christian Rock...songs about Jesus that have beats and tempos not approved of by Sir Gothard. Aaaahhhhh, my friends thought I had lost it. Like a lemming to the sea I was!
Menconi makes a great point when he states, "He is such a powerful influence in the conservative evangelical community that people often quote Gothard before they quote God." It is very sad, but true. If we would actually (myself included) read and study the passage of Scripture that a Gothard, Ezzo, Tripp or Pearl attaches to a point, there would be much less false teaching and "lost Christians" who spend a part of their life buying into the "teacher of day", and then determine that it is not working in their life the way the teacher advertised. So the thinking goes.... I still must not be Christian enough, spiritual enough and soon the "struggle" to be a Christian in a un-Christian world goes by the way side....because this isn't working. A spiritual drift sets in. You can pray for me....because this is kind of where I feel I have been at for quite some time. I don't want to be duped again... but I also want a deeper, more fulfilled, less sinful walk with Christ than what I have now. What do I do?...Where do I go to have my faith restored? Tulipgirl and others who are blogging about a fulfilled Christian walk...you are helping to reconnect people to their "first love", whether you realize it or not.

Thanks for your blog. I think my friend got saved at the Keith Green concert you wrote about.
As for Gothard and the rest, I couldn't agree more with what you said. They provide easy "answers" to questions most people don't even have. I have a few Gothard groupie friends who raise their eyebrows whenever they hear the music coming from my car. And it's just Vineyard praise music. Oh well, I'm struggling to walk in freedom anyway!

This blog has been very Helpful to me. I have a friend who recently was in a rising area band, all christian members, but the music wasn't all "christian" music persay; so the lead singer (who was raised under Bill Gothard's homeschool program and Ideals) one day he randomly left everything, his friends, his band, and his dreams and passions in order to try to live by Bill Gothards set of laws. I beleive he is genuinly seeking God and trying to be his best and do what he thinks is the only way to successed. But, in the mean time he has lost everythig he once loved, doesn't enjoy what he is doing (occupation wise), pushed away all his friends and pretty much won't talk to them about why "they cant be friends" anymore. He just keeps getting farther and farther down the path. My friends and I are starting to become very concerned and just want to see him live in the freedom of God and to stop feeling so confined by these burdins and legalistic (seemingly border line cultish) was of living. We want to approch him about it, but don't know the best way to go about bringing up the subject to him in a manner that he will be opening to seeing the error in Bill Gothards teaching while still embracing the good teachings. We don't want to come across in a way that will completely push him away from us, do you have any suggestions on how we should approch him in a way that just shows our genuine concern without attacking him or Bill Gothards teachings? If you have any advice I would greatly appraciate it. My e-mail address is hannah_banona@yahoo.com if you have any suggestions. Thank you so much!

I too have moved on from Bill Gothard. I read your story and relate. I myself have stopped going to church and feel as if I am finally free. I lived in church types that were very cult like.
I have moved on and left religion behind. I am so free now

I too 'bought in to the Gothard' teaching's. And backslid very badly because i could not live up to the standard Bill Gothard demanded. He left me confused and bewildered.Thank God for His faithfullness in His Son.It's ALL about Jesus Christ and what He did for us.He took our sins upon himself. We need to know who we are in Christ. What He did for us. When we simply turn to Christ we are born again! We are a brand new creation. What we all run into is this horrible struggle with our old nature versus our new nature. It's all been done for us by His grace through the Lord Jesus Christ. Bill Gothard teaches nothing of grace other than we must earn it!!What a play on words. Its impossible for us to earn Gods grace because it's freely given to all those that ask! When we become born again by asking Jesus to save us we need to understand what Jesus did for us not be taught legalistic rules to abide by.We need to cling to Jesus and look only to Him. It's ALL of Jesus..nothing we do other than trust Him to work in us. I never once heard Bill Gothard proclaim He works in us to WILL and to do of His good pleasure. Its always about we need to do this or that..he preaches WORKS guys not GRACE.Bill Gothard is a false teacher. The only good that can come out of his teachings is the realization we can not live up to Bill Gothards standards nor can he.So lets quit trying and simply believe..we are by nature sinners..'for all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God' The wages of sin is death..but the GIFT of God is salvation through Jesus Christ. Guys..we are saved through simply beleiving Jesus took our sins upon Himself..we are saved by Jesus..we are kept by Jesus..it's a looking unto Jesus not how we are doing..not how much we have grown..not even if we have overcome our sin..it is ALL of Jesus!!
